This past January, 1in6 celebrated its 11th anniversary; My Friend’s Place and The Youth Project also had anniversaries that month. All told, the three organizations that I’ve been involved with are celebrating a combined 59 years of service to the LA community and beyond. I couldn’t be happier.
Happy New Year! This letter comes from incoming 1in6 Board President, Claire Harwell. Dear Friends, Thirty-six years ago, I signed up to be a volunteer with a small rape crisis center. In those days, we primarily went to emergency rooms late at night and took crisis phone calls in the wee hours of the morning
We’re grateful to have enjoyed another year (our 10th year!) of service and growth at 1in6, marked by strides in our awareness-raising efforts and the expansion of our online support services for men who have experienced sexual abuse and assault, and the people who care about them.
Every other month I provide you with a brief update of our good fortune and progress. While we have enjoyed a busy summer and our strategic work is proving to be the key to serving more men and their loved ones than ever before, I’d like to skip the specifics and just mention that our hearts break and go out to everyone in the Houston and surrounding areas who have been affected by Hurricane Harvey.
Another important part of the Bristlecone Project is the filming of each volunteer during the portrait sessions. The two and three hour sessions are now being edited down to short two and three minute vignettes on such topics as anger, fear, hope, resiliency, etc., and will soon populate a library-by-topic that can be accessed by anyone via our website.
