November/December 2016 Newsletter

Dear Friends,

Happy Holidays!

Every year at this time, I pen a letter to thank all of you for your part in the good fortune that we’ve enjoyed! This year is no different, and in fact, this may be one of my most important Thanksgiving letters to date. This has been a milestone year for 1in6 in so many ways.

This past March, we saw 1in6 and our PSA (produced by 1in6 partners Joyful Heart FoundationNO MORE, and Viacom) featured for an entire week (every 8 minutes, 24/7, for 7 days) in Times Square. The exposure that this brought to the issue and the exposure of the PSAs that continue to run on Viacom networks could not have been imagined even a few years ago. The entire process and the eventual final public service announcement speaks to the valuable partnerships that 1in6 has enjoyed over the years.

This past spring and summer, 1in6 added new staff and board members, allowing us to strengthen our infrastructure and move towards becoming an even more sustainable organization, next year and beyond. Specifically, Rick Goodwin joined us as our Director of Training Initiatives, and Claire Harwell joined the board and has already made inroads in our development and grant writing efforts. I’m constantly reminded that our people (staff, volunteers, and board) make us better.

At our June board meeting, our board approved an important change to our initial mission, and our work now includes men who suffered sexual assault as adults. And all this year, we’ve seen an increase in requests for trainings and have been able to deliver presentations and trainings all over the world to the military, professionals, and organizations who have an ever increasing commitment to serving men who had unwanted sexual experiences, both as children and adults.

In July, we launched the newly redesigned 1in6 homepage. Our goal was a simpler and more intuitive web presence, and we’ve received wonderful feedback. We are continuing to improve the homepage, and this August we began laying the groundwork to update the entire site to be more accessible and engaging.

There’s also a bittersweet thanks to extend here. Peter Pollard, who has been our longest serving staff member (eight years), will be moving on to work for the Office of Victims of Crime on an important initiative that they will be launching in January of 2017. Peter’s stalwart support of 1in6 and our mission through his deep commitment to the men we serve leaves an indelible imprint on our work. Peter is, as I like to say, part of our DNA. It is with both deep gratitude and great sadness that we say farewell to Peter in his current capacity with us.

Finally, we have enjoyed our best year ever financially thanks to your generous support, and we will be able to move in to 2017, our tenth anniversary year, on solid footing. For that you have my sincerest thanks and commitment to investing your contributions wisely. Our issue remains one of the most difficult to create awareness about and raise support for, but we are committed and appreciative of your belief in our work.

It’s my hope that you, your family, friends, and colleagues enjoy a happy holiday season.

Warm regards,

Steve LePore
