A classic still viewed by many as the best book ever written on psychological trauma and its treatment. Loaded with insights on 'Complex PTSD' and the 'stages of recovery.' However, men should know that Herman largely neglects their experiences of sexual abuse, comes from a "war of the sexes" feminist perspective, and over-simplifies things in terms of perpetrators and victims. Still, she brings together a great deal of research with decades of clinical wisdom and historical, political and moral insights. That is, despite the shortcomings, it's still a great book.
