An all-day training for advocates and service providers. It begins with a comprehensive and interactive exploration of issues affecting male survivors. All-day training for advocates and service providers, offering comprehensive and interactive exploration of:

  • Barriers for men seeking treatment for unwanted or abusive boyhood sexual experiences (including influences of race, nationality, class, sexual orientation, immigration status, religion and ability)
  • Ways to acknowledge and potentially mitigate those barriers
  • In-depth discussion of existing resources for men, including online resources offered by 1in6 (website information for men, families and partners; Online SupportLine; and lending library), MaleSurvivor and other organizations.

After establishing a foundational framework on issues affecting male survivors, those issues are brought to life by watching the powerful and hopeful documentary film “Boys and Men Healing.” Discussion then connects observations from the film to the material covered in the morning. Closes with small group discussions of action steps that will make services more readily available to men.

Discussion links participants’ observations from the film with presented theoretical material on challenges male survivors face. The workshop closes with small group discussions about potential action steps to make services more readily available to men. Includes both small group and interactive discussion.

Goals

  • Identify barriers for  men seeking treatment for unwanted or abusive sexual experiences in childhood (including influences of race, nationality, class, sexual orientation, immigration status, religion and ability)
  • Describe ways to acknowledge and potentially mitigate those barriers
  • Review existing resources for men including online resources offered by 1in6 (website information for men and partners and families; Online Supportline; and lending library) and by Male Survivor.
  • Discuss concrete action steps to enhance awareness about the impact on men of unwanted and abusive sexual experiences in childhood and to make services more readily available.

Objectives

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe how issues of masculinity, gender identity, sexual orientation, gender and  sexuality impact men’s response to sexual abuse in childhood.
  • Name social and cultural norms that may inhibit male survivors from reaching out for help
  • Identify additional challenges influenced by race, class, nationality, immigration status, sexual orientation, ability and age.
  • Discuss strategies for supporting a friend or family member of a male survivor to distinguish between their feelings and needs and those of the survivor in exploring the unwanted or abusive behavior and its impact
