Accurate, Reliable and Respectful Information
Individuals, families, organizations and communities need accurate and reliable information for men dealing with issues related to traumatic sexual experiences in childhood. Our Community Education and Outreach program provides that information.
Our program addresses those aspects of men’s lives – both positive and negative – that can affect their ability and willingness to address harmful childhood experiences. These include race, class, nationality, immigration status, ability, religion, sexual orientation and other influences that must be respected and honored if real understand and healing are to happen.
As men become aware that effects of childhood sexual experiences may be playing a role in their lives, truly helpful information and services must be readily available and easily accessible. One of the main thrusts of our Community Education and Outreach program is to promote the information and resources available through 1in6.org, which may also be a first step toward seeking help in person.
Our Methods and Programs
We use a variety of education and outreach methods including brochures, poster campaigns, public service announcements, press releases, speakers and a comprehensive training program.
College Campus Campaign
Typically men wait until their 30’s, 40’s or even later before beginning to deal with the negative effects of unwanted or abusive sexual experiences in childhood. By reaching out to young men on college campuses we will encourage them to begin their recovery processes earlier in life, before negative behaviors and thinking become adult habits.
We have launched the 1in6 College Campus Campaign on five campuses in Los Angeles: USC, UCLA, Cal State Northridge, Cal State Fullerton and Pasadena City College. This local campaign is designed to be a pilot that will test for efficacy and best practices that will become a national model for reaching out to college-age men. We have also developed print materials and other resources for college health and psychological service centers, newspapers and other university media outlets.
Community Campaign
Over the coming years 1in6 will continue to expand its Community Education and Outreach resources. We know men from all backgrounds are affected by unwanted or abusive sexual experiences in childhood.
Our plan is to reach out to a cross section of groups such as LGBT, Religious, Military, mental health facilities, and so forth, to ensure that we are meeting men where they are.
